Self Introduction email

Hello Prof,

This is my introductory letter to you in hope you will be able to know me better. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering in Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering (Building Services) at Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) as a freshman. I was previously from Singapore Polytechnic, with a diploma in facilities management. I have an interest in the built environment industry as I felt that it is an industry that is ever changing due to new and smarter technology. Hence, I decided to further my studies in SIT.

I am currently trying to find new hobbies as I do not have any previously. Since secondary school, I have been working part time during my holidays and weekends. Thus, I do not have additional time for hobbies. One of my goals in university is to pick up some hobbies and also try to fully enjoy the university experience by stopping all part time work, having more time for schools and other activities. I attended the in-line skates club trial session and I found it interesting. I believe it will be one for the new hobbies I will pick up in university.

My goals that I wish to achieve through this module is to improve my English skills. I grew up in a Mandarin speaking family. Hence, English was never my strength. I even failed the subject for my GCE Ordinary Level (O Level) in secondary school. I am always facing issue with grammar. I remember saying "I doesn't know" back then and my friends were laughing at me. At that point, I did not even know what was wrong with the sentence until, I realized I should be using "don't" instead of "doesn't". I took the additional step to read and communicate in English more often since then, hoping it will improve my grammar. I like to believe that I am able to present to others confidently but my grammar always make me think twice. Thus, I hope that through this module, I will be able to present fluently and confidently without any grammatical errors.

Thank you and I look forward to having more fun lessons with you.

Best regards,

Kathleen Tan

Critical Reflection

I started this module without much interest as I felt that I went through 6 similar modules in Polytechnic and this is going to be the same thing all over again. However, my assumptions were wrong and this module is definitely not the same. This module widen my horizon on reporting writing and presentation.     At the start of this module, my goals for this module was to improve my English skills. Throughout the 13 weeks, I felt more confident with presenting and conversing in English. I was able to learn not just presenting skills but writing skills as well.   During my years in Polytechnic, presentations were very different. The slides made by me then were way different from the style I am using now. Back in the days, I would just fill my entire slides with words and a couple of small images. I seldom memorise my script and most of the time, I would just read through my phone or directly from the slides. I did not make much effort to improve my presentation skills as everyone around

Article Summary Draft #2

The webpage by ENGIE (2013) states that ENGIE is top in the European market and also the world's biggest independent provider of urban cooling networks, providing constant comfort needs to public and private sectors while ensuring environmental sustainability by cutting down carbon dioxide release. It also have a global influence on the heating and cooling network due to its extensive operation, ranging from Malaysia to Italy. ENGIE customizes solutions for different demands. The company uses renewable energy to generate heat for its heating networks alongside the use of freshwater for their cooling networks. Such an approach is more environmentally friendly compared to competitors in the market. These are part its plan to increase renewables to 50% across its European urban network starting from 2018.  District heating and cooling systems | ENGIE. (2013).
